Sticks N' Stones

THE FOLLOWING IS SUBMITTED BY A GUEST BLOGGER - SERGE TENTHOREY

Sticks ‘n Stones

“Sticks and Stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is a mantra off-quoted by children when insulted.  Yet down deep the words inflict more hurt than is admitted.

In the ancient book of wisdom, Proverbs, we are told that “there is he that speaks like a sword that pierces, but a wise person’s words heal”.  Certainly the power of words has been understood from the start.

The question is, of course, what words do we speak?  Are we the cynics, or negative speakers?  Do we gossip, cut down people - to their face or behind their back?  Do we speak truth in a harsh judgmental way?  Do we criticize? Do we ridicule?

The movie “Pay it forward” showed the power of a single positive idea.  Although fictional, the principle is valid.  If we were to determine, every day, to speak some words of healing, be it appreciation, affirmation, love, or even thanks, we would not only brighten the day for someone, but brighten ours as well.

We probably will never know the ripple effect of our words.  We may well hold the balance in a person’s day - whether it will be good for them or not.  The effects of our words will touch many lives before coming to rest.

So, what will your words be today?  What will mine be?
